Divya Desam #69 of 108
Sri Vamanamoorthy Temple at Thrikkakara (Thirumittakode) is one of the most culturally significant Divya Desams in all of Malai Nadu, celebrated in the Divya Prabandham and revered as the site where Lord Vishnu incarnated as Vamana, the divine dwarf-Brahmin, to reclaim the three worlds from the generous demon-king Mahabali. It is from this legend that Kerala's grandest festival, Onam, originates — Onam celebrates the annual return of King Mahabali to visit his beloved people, permitted by Lord Vamana who was moved by Mahabali's selfless generosity. The deity "Vamanamoorthy" is the Trivikrama form — the Lord who took three cosmic strides to span earth, sky, and the heavens. Nammalvar glorified the Trivikrama avatar in his Thiruvaimozhi, marveling at the Lord who grew from a tiny dwarf to encompass all existence. Kulasekhara Azhwar, as a Kerala king himself, would have had a deep connection to this shrine celebrating divine kingship and righteous sovereignty. The temple is the epicenter of Onam celebrations in Kerala, with the Thrikkakara Appan (Lord of Thrikkakara) worshipped with floral pookkalam (rangoli), grand feasts (Onasadya), and traditional Vallamkali (boat races).
Nearest airport is Cochin International Airport (20 km). Ernakulam Junction railway station is about 10 km away. Located at Thrikkakara in Ernakulam district, easily accessible from Kochi city.
