Divya Desam #59 of 108
Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple at Thiruvananthapuram is the most celebrated Divya Desam in Malai Nadu and one of the wealthiest temples in the world. The presiding deity, Sri Padmanabha Perumal, reclines on the serpent Anantha (Adisesha) in a vast sanctum so expansive that the Lord's form can only be viewed through three separate doors — the face, the navel with the lotus bearing Brahma, and the lotus feet. The city of Thiruvananthapuram itself derives its name from "Thiru Anantha Puram" — the sacred abode of Anantha. Nammalvar glorified this deity in the Thiruvaimozhi, and Kulasekhara Azhwar, the royal saint-king of Kerala, composed his immortal Perumal Thirumozhi and Mukundamala here, expressing unparalleled devotion to this Lord. The Travancore Maharajas served as "Padmanabha Dasa" (servants of Padmanabha), dedicating their kingdom to the deity. The temple architecture is a magnificent fusion of Kerala's distinctive sloping tiled roofs, ornate wooden carvings, and mural paintings with Dravidian gopuram elements — a hallmark of Malai Nadu sacred architecture.
Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is 6 km away. Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station is about 1 km from the temple. Located in the heart of Kerala's capital city.
