Divya Desam #105 of 108
Sri Ksheerabhdi Nathan at Thiruparkadal (the Milky Ocean / Ksheerabdhi) is one of the two celestial (non-physical) Divya Desams that transcend geographical location, existing in the metaphysical realm of Sri Vaishnava cosmology. Thiruparkadal — "Thiru" (sacred) + "Parkadal" (ocean of milk) — is the cosmic ocean upon which Lord Vishnu eternally reclines on the serpent Adisesha, with Sri Mahalakshmi at His feet, attended by Garuda, Vishvaksena, and the nitya-suris (eternal divine beings). It is from this cosmic repose that Vishnu creates, sustains, and dissolves the universe; it is here that Mahalakshmi emerged during the Samudra Manthanam (churning of the ocean); and it is to this abode that yogis and devotees aspire through meditation. Nammalvar and Thirumangai Azhwar both praised Thiruparkadal, meditating on the Lord's cosmic form with awe-filled devotion. This celestial Divya Desam reminds devotees that beyond all earthly temples, the Lord's ultimate abode is transcendent — yet paradoxically, it is this very transcendent Lord who chooses to descend into the archa (temple deity) forms accessible to all.
Thiruparkadal is a celestial abode, not a physical location. It is accessed through meditation, prayer, and the recitation of the Divya Prabandham. Every Vishnu temple's moolavar in reclining posture is considered a manifestation of the Lord of Thiruparkadal.
