About Sri Moorthy Perumal Temple (Salagram/Muktinath)

Sri Moorthy Perumal Temple at Muktinath (known as Salagramam in the Sri Vaishnava tradition) in the Mustang district of Nepal is the only Divya Desam located outside India. Perched at approximately 3,710 metres in the trans-Himalayan landscape near the Kali Gandaki gorge, this is the sacred source of Salagrama Shilas — the naturally formed ammonite fossils venerated as self-manifest (svayambhu) forms of Lord Vishnu in every Sri Vaishnava household. Nammalvar praised Salagramam with intense devotion in his Thiruvaimozhi, expressing the anguish of separation from the Lord who dwells in these impossibly remote heights. The 108 water spouts at the temple and the eternal flames of natural gas nearby create a mystical atmosphere of elemental sanctity — water, fire, earth, and air converging to proclaim Vishnu's sovereignty over all elements.
