About Sri Vanpurushothama Perumal Temple (Thirunangur)

Sri Vanpurushothama Perumal Temple at Thirunangur is the principal shrine of the eleven-temple Thirunangur cluster, one of the most sacred Divya Desam groups in Chola Nadu, celebrated by Thirumangai Azhwar in the Divya Prabandham. The deity's name "Vanpurushothama" means "the Supreme Being of great strength (Van — great, Purushothama — Supreme Person)," a powerful expression of Vishnu as the ultimate reality described in the Bhagavad Gita. Thirunangur gives its name to the entire cluster and is the center of the magnificent annual Garuda Sevai festival, when all eleven temple deities are mounted on Garuda vahanams and brought together in a grand procession. This spectacular event draws thousands of Sri Vaishnava devotees and is one of the most celebrated temple festivals in Tamil Nadu.
