Divya Desam #58 of 108
Sri Koodal Azhagar Temple at Thirukoodal (Madurai) is a magnificent Divya Desam in the heart of the ancient Pandya capital, praised by Nammalvar and Periyazhwar in the Divya Prabandham. The deity's name "Koodal Azhagar" means "the Beautiful Lord of Koodal" — Koodal being an ancient name for Madurai (meaning "meeting place" or "assembly"). This temple is remarkable for presenting Lord Vishnu in three postures simultaneously on three levels: standing on the ground floor, sitting on the first floor, and reclining on the top floor — a rare and symbolically rich arrangement conveying the Lord's omnipresence in all states. Periyazhwar won his famous debate at the Pandya court in Madurai, and Nammalvar's Thiruvaimozhi pasurams on this temple are among his most celebrated. The temple stands as a Sri Vaishnava jewel amid the predominantly Shaiva sacred landscape of Madurai, embodying the spiritual harmony of the ancient Pandya kingdom.
Nearest airport is Madurai International Airport (15 km). Madurai Junction railway station is about 2 km away. Located in the heart of Madurai city.
