About Sri Aadhinatha Perumal Temple (Alwar Tirunagari)

Sri Aadhinatha Perumal Temple at Alwar Tirunagari (Thirukkurugoor) is arguably the most spiritually significant Divya Desam in the Pandya Nadu region, revered as the birthplace of Nammalvar (Sadagopan / Maran), the foremost among the twelve Azhwars. The deity "Aadhinatha" means "the Primordial Lord" — the first and ultimate cause of all existence. Nammalvar, born here under a tamarind tree, composed the monumental Thiruvaimozhi (1,102 verses), which Sri Vaishnavas regard as the Tamil Veda and the essence of the Upanishads. Madhurakavi Azhwar, Nammalvar's devoted disciple, discovered his guru in deep meditation under the tamarind tree at this very site and devoted his life entirely to Nammalvar's service. The sacred tamarind tree still stands within the temple complex. Alwar Tirunagari is the spiritual heart of the Azhwar tradition and an indispensable pilgrimage for every Sri Vaishnava.
