About Sri Azhagiya Singar Temple

Sri Azhagiya Singar Temple at Thiruvelukkai in Kanchipuram celebrates Lord Narasimha in His most beautiful and graceful form — "Azhagiya Singar" means "the Beautiful Lion" (Azhagu = beauty, Singar/Simha = lion). While the Narasimha avatar is often depicted in fierce ugra (wrathful) form, here the Lord is in His gentle, handsome, post-fury form after comforting Prahlada, radiating divine beauty and supreme grace. This aspect of Narasimha — fierce enough to destroy evil yet beautiful enough to captivate the hearts of devotees — is a favorite meditation among Sri Vaishnavas. Poigai Azhwar, born in Kanchipuram, and Thirumazhisai Azhwar, the great Thondai Nadu saint, both venerated Narasimha with deep philosophical understanding. Thirumangai Azhwar also praised this shrine. The temple reflects the Kanchipuram tradition of presenting each Vishnu avatar in a unique and theologically rich manner, creating a comprehensive darshan of the Lord's infinite forms across the city's many Divya Desams.
