Divya Desam #91 of 108
Sri Ulagalanda Perumal Temple at Thiruooragam in the Kanchipuram area enshrines the Lord in His glorious Trivikrama form — "Ulagalanda" meaning "He who measured the world." The name "Ooragam" is etymologically connected to "Uraga" (serpent), and some traditions associate this shrine with the Lord resting on the great serpent Adisesha before taking His cosmic strides. Thondai Nadu has a special affinity for the Trivikrama avatar, with multiple Divya Desams in this region celebrating the Lord who grew from the dwarf Vamana to the universe-spanning Trivikrama. Thirumazhisai Azhwar, the great philosopher-saint of Thondai Nadu, explored the Trivikrama leela as a metaphor for the Lord's ability to transcend all limitations. Thirumangai Azhwar also sang of this shrine with characteristic grandeur. The temple preserves the devotional landscape of greater Kanchipuram, where every village and hillock seems to harbor a Divya Desam.
