About Sri Sthalasayana Perumal Temple

Sri Sthalasayana Perumal Temple at Thirukadalmallai (Mahabalipuram) is one of the most dramatically situated Divya Desams — located at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Mahabalipuram, the ancient Pallava dynasty port city famed for its monolithic rock-cut temples and shore temples. "Sthalasayana" means "the Lord who reclines on the ground (sthala)" rather than on the cosmic ocean, a unique posture among Vishnu shrines. The temple is directly associated with the Pallava dynasty's greatest architectural achievements, and the nearby Shore Temple, Arjuna's Penance, and the Five Rathas are among India's finest monuments. Bhoothathazhwar, the second of the Mudhal Azhwars, was born at Mahabalipuram — making this one of the holiest sites in Thondai Nadu's Azhwar heritage. Thirumangai Azhwar also praised this seaside shrine, and the sound of waves and sea-wind at this temple create an unforgettable devotional atmosphere.
